Does the Blue Cash Preferred’s fee pay off?

Against a 3% grocery card, the Preferred earns an extra 3 percentage points at U.S. supermarkets. Once the $95 fee applies, you need about $3,167 a year in supermarket spending ($95 ÷ 0.03), about $264 a month, for the extra 3% to cover the fee. Spend the full $6,000 and the extra 3% is worth $180, or $85 after the fee. That math ignores the Preferred’s other categories, such as 6% on select U.S. streaming.

Watch the definition of “grocery store”

Card issuers decide what counts based on how a merchant is coded. Capital One says superstores like Walmart and Target are excluded from Savor’s grocery category, and Chase excludes Walmart and Target from Freedom Flex’s Q4 2026 grocery category. If you buy most groceries at a superstore or warehouse club, a flat 2% card may beat a grocery card.
