Advertiser disclosure: Cash Back Specialist may be paid when you open an account or sign up through some links on this page. Short answer: On one online purchase you can often earn four ways: (1) a coupon code or sale, (2) a cash back site, (3) your credit card’s rewards and (4) a card-linked offer from your bank. Set them up in that order, and check that the portal allows the coupon.
The four layers
- Coupon or sale. Find a verified code or the store’s own sale on I Need Coupons. It lowers the price before anything else is calculated.
- Cash back site. Click through Rakuten, TopCashback or another portal right before you buy. See the best cash back sites.
- Credit card rewards. Pay with the card that earns most at that store: a 2% card or a category card.
- Card-linked offers. Banks run merchant offer programs, such as My Wells Fargo Deals and Citi Merchant Offers, that pay a credit when you enroll an offer and buy with that card.
In stores, add a receipt app: Ibotta or Fetch.
Worked example
Say you buy $100 of household goods online with a $10-off code, through a portal paying 3% that day, using a 2% card:
| Step | Value |
|---|---|
| Coupon | $10 off, so you pay $90 |
| Portal at 3% (portals usually pay on the amount after discounts, before tax and shipping) | $2.70 |
| 2% card on $90 | $1.80 |
| Total saved | $14.50, or 14.5% |
Rules that protect your cash back
- Use only coupons the portal allows. TopCashback says only vouchers it lists and authorizes work with its cash back.
- Click the portal last, right before checkout; another site’s link can override it.
- Gift cards, taxes and shipping often don’t earn portal cash back. Check each store’s terms.
- Never carry a balance to earn rewards: interest at 18% to 29% APR costs far more than 2% back.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a coupon and cash back at the same time?
Often yes, but some stores void portal cash back if you use a code the portal doesn't list. Check the portal's terms for that store.
What is a card-linked offer?
A merchant deal in your card's app or website, such as My Wells Fargo Deals or Citi Merchant Offers. You enroll the offer, pay with that card, and get a credit.
